Which State Should You Live in to Pay the Least in Overall Taxes?
I couldn’t resist the urge to geek out on some data regarding taxes paid in the United States. I often hear about the advantages of living in one of the eight states in the U.S. that do not collect state income taxes. I always assumed that those states must have higher sales taxes and/or higher property taxes to make up for the discrepency.
I tried to search for the answer I was looking for, but it seems nobody else has put this data together. At least I couldn’t find it. I even tried using AI (ChatGPT) to see if it could pull together some data for me and get me a quick answer. Nope! I was going to have to do this on my own.
And so I did. I looked up and compiled several different data points regarding taxes for each individual state and put it all together in a spreadsheet. I ran a quick calculation on one of the sheets to figure out the average total taxes paid in each state (income tax + sales tax + property tax) using some specific variables. The results actually surprised me! Can you guess which states pay the most and least in overall taxes using the variables in my spreadsheet? Here ya go…

The History
On this day, in 270 to 280ish (AD)…
St. Valentine was a priest who lived during the third century in Rome. He was known for performing secret marriages for Christian couples, which was against the law at the time. As a result, he was imprisoned and eventually executed on February 14th.
Over time, the story of St. Valentine’s martyrdom became intertwined with romantic legends, including one about him sending a love letter to a woman he had fallen in love with while in prison. These legends have helped to shape the modern-day celebration of Valentine’s Day. Despite the lack of historical evidence supporting these romantic stories, St. Valentine continues to be celebrated as a symbol of love and devotion. (Read the full story here)
