Invest in a REIT to Increase Your Passive Income Portfolio
A REIT is a company that owns, finances, or operates income-producing real estate. The profits are then returned to investors in the form of dividends.
In the United States (and in many other countries), REITs have to conform to a stringent set of criteria in order to meet regulations imposed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In return for adhering to these, a REIT is exempt from paying corporate tax. See the exact criteria towards the beginning of this article on the Dumb Passive Income blog.
Being free from corporate taxes means that REITs can reinvest more money into growing the business. It also means that there is more money available to return to investors! This is partly why REIT investments can be so lucrative, and sometimes more steady (as compared to regular stock market investing).
