A REIT is a company that owns, finances, or operates income-producing real estate. The profits are then returned to investors in the form of dividends.
In the United States (and in many other countries), REITs have to conform to a stringent set of criteria in order to meet regulations imposed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Being free from corporate taxes means that REITs can reinvest more money into growing the business. It also means that there is more money available to return to investors! This is partly why REIT investments can be so lucrative, and sometimes more steady (as compared to regular stock market investing).
